Second 'dental camp' in Mongolia
Nijmegen dentist Joost van Vlijmen has carried out a second successful 'dental camp' in Ulaanbaatar with his team, providing free dental care to people at the garbage dump and children in the orphanage.
In June, the Nijmegen dentist Joost van Vlijmen and dental hygienist Truus Hutten paid a very successful working visit to Mongolia in collaboration with Stichting Steppekinderen. As volunteers, they treated a large number of children from the orphanage of which twenty children had to have molars extracted. They also provided free help in a slum area of Ulaanbaatar, where many residents have bad teeth due to severe malnutrition.
The dentist and dental hygienist did not have access to an electric drill, X-rays or a dental technician, but had to make do with two suitcases full of instruments: dozens of pliers, a pressure cooker for sterilization, spatulas, gloves, masks, needles and anesthetic fluid.
The photos show some children living in the orphanage and receiving dental care. A second dental camp for Mongolia is planned for 2008.

Since 2006, the foundation tries to improve the situation of the children in Mongolia each year. Thanks to donations and collection campaigns, we have built 26 gers (living shelters).
Even a relatively small amount of money can do a lot, because in Mongolia, where many herders earn barely twenty euros a month, your money is worth more than five times that!
Thank you to all who support our small but important work!
