Last May, we received an urgent request from the Khan-Uul District Welfare Center in Ulaanbaatar to help a homeless and single mother, 34-year-old Ms. Solongo Ganzorig.

Solongo grew up in the Lotus Children’s Center, an orphanage in a suburb of the Mongolian capital. She was admitted there in 1990 after her father died and her mother fell into a coma. She left the orphanage in 2003 and got married a year later.

During her marriage, she was abused by her husband, who was addicted to alcohol and could be very violent at times.

At the beginning of February 2018, she fled with her sons Munkhtogoldor (12) and Munkhtor (10) to the orphanage where she had grown up, but because there was no room for her there, the welfare center of the Khan-Uul district provided a temporary home. Now, Solongo has to leave this shelter again.

After assessing the situation on site by our employee in Ulaanbaatar, the Steppekinderen Foundation has decided to build a living tent. Here, Solongo Ganzorig will be able to live safely with her children from now on.

Help underprivileged children in Mongolia

Since 2006, the foundation tries to improve the situation of the children in Mongolia each year. Thanks to donations and collection campaigns, we have built 26 gers (living shelters).

Even a relatively small amount of money can do a lot, because in Mongolia, where many herders earn barely twenty euros a month, your money is worth more than five times that!
